Blackout: total darkness, total privacy
Blackout fabric is coated so no light passes through the material — with an outside mount that overlaps the window generously, the room goes properly dark. It also gives complete privacy day and night, and blocks the most heat.
The trade-off: when it's down, you see nothing and get no daylight. It's down-or-up, nothing in between.

Sunscreen: kills glare, keeps the view
Sunscreen fabric is a tight technical weave with tiny openings, rated by 'openness' — the percentage of light let through. It cuts glare and UV dramatically while letting you still see out. This is the fabric that makes a hot west-facing window liveable without living in the dark.
The privacy rule everyone should know: sunscreen works like a one-way mirror. Daytime, brighter outside — people can't see in. At night with your lights on, it reverses: people CAN see in. Bedrooms need blackout or a curtain layer for night privacy.

Light-filtering / translucent: soft glow
Translucent fabric blocks the view both ways but lets diffused light through — the room stays bright with no harsh sun. Think of it as a permanent sheer curtain. Good for bathrooms and spaces where you want daytime privacy without darkness.
